Peanuts and Egg

When Greyson was about 18 months old I gave him a 1cm x 1cm piece of toast with some peanut butter on it and his face and mouth immediately swelled up. He started coughing and crying. We had to give him Benadryl, watch him closely, and, as the advice nurse at our doctor's office warned us, if he still didn't improve, call 911. Scary stuff.

About two months ago, we took Greyson to an allergist to confirm his allergy to peanuts, and see what else he's allergic to. The doctor made us do a blood test first, because he said that sometimes allergies show up in the blood and it isn't necessary to do the skin test. In hindsight, it was a wasted expense because Greyson suffered major trauma getting his blood drawn, and the only allergy that showed up in the blood work was egg. We still ended up having to get a skin test done to be certain what was going on with the peanuts. After several visits and lots of waiting in doctor's offices, Greyson had his skin test and it was confirmed that he is allergic to both peanuts and egg. His reaction to peanuts was relatively small, and since it didn't come up in the blood test, there's a good chance he might outgrow it. For the time being, we carry an Epipen and three vials of Benadryl wherever we go. I truly hope he outgrows it, because I would hate to spend his whole life afraid something might happen to him from taking a bite from his friend's sandwich at school. Talk about things you can't control.
