Crazy Kid

We woke up with Crazy Kid today. Greyson was pushing all our buttons this morning. He was super hyper, super demanding, running around demonstrating a monstrous lack of impulse control, not listening when given instruction, squirming during diaper changes, whining during sunscreen application...the works. Even the most idyllic surroundings cannot insulate you from a misbehaving child. We went to Sand Harbor Beach this morning and while we were there, we climbed up on top of these incredible rock formations to take in the view. We held Greyson while we were up there, and he was just impossible...trying to get away, whining, complaining, basically wanting to get up and walk around on top of the giant rocks himself and fall to his death. It drove us both nuts. It's not right that such a little person has so much power over his parents.

In an effort to save a frustrating morning, I suggested we go for a swim. When Grey gets like that, I find it the most helpful just to find an activity that requires the least supervision, consists of the most distraction, and use it to break the cycle. Otherwise, I'm annoyed.. he senses it.. he reacts to it.. I get more frustrated.. he gets increasingly agitated, and we just spiral downwards. It helps us stop bouncing all this frustration and negativity back and forth and focus on something else. Anyway, it worked. He spent a glorious hour in the pool, had a big lunch by the water, and then went home and had a lousy nap.

Ironically, he woke up calmer and more pleasant than he was before his nap. We drove into Tahoe City to sight-see and explore. It was a far cry from Incline Village, which in my limited book, is now the only place to stay when you're up here. Still, it was fun to see another side of this amazing place. We treated ourselves to an early dinner at a fancy restaurant by the lake. Greyson, for all of his insanity today, was an angel during dinner. He ate well, sat well, accepted all our introductions of fancy foods repeating them after us, "Podetah! (polenta), Yu! (Mandarin for sea bass, or fish) Back Bubay! (black blueberry, which is really a blackberry)" After dinner, we went for a stroll on the beach and Greyson climbed the play structure at the playground with his Papi. He loves the playground here, and he's starting to get into climbing (finally!). We have decided to extend our trip by one more day so that Grey can have more time by the pool and beaches.
