First Trip to the Dentist

Greyson had his first dentist appointment today. I wasn't sure how he would do. Even though we're religious about brushing his teeth twice a day, he has good and bad days. Some days he opens wide, and with the assistance of lots of clapping and cheering from Baby and Mama Wooly, we get a great brush. Other days, he clamps down and just refuses to cooperate, which is why he surprised me today by being more than cooperative. Thankfully, today was a good day.

The receptionist greeted him with an assortment of toothbrushes to choose from. He made his choice, and immediately shoved it into his mouth, saying "Cheese!" and started brushing happily. He let the hygienist brush his teeth, he played with the "water gun", looked at his teeth with a little mirror, he even climbed into the chair calling it a "blue car seat." He ran around the office entertaining himself with the multitude of cabinet doors, demonstrating "Loud!" and "Quiet" while opening and closing them. He laid back on a pillow to let the dentist count his teeth, and even though he fussed a little at the end, he was over it the moment he sat up. Even the staff were impressed with him. The hygienist was surprised how comfortable he was with his toothbrush. Apparently a lot of kids take one look at a toothbrush and cry, and getting them into the dentist chair is impossible. Roque is practically bursting with pride right now. He went back to work bragging about his boy.

We are so proud to report that Greyson has no cavities, no stains and his teeth are in great condition. He didn't even need a cleaning. The dentist applauded us for doing a great job with him. I guess his teeth reflect our dedication to brushing and our restriction of sugar in his diet. He also said that Greyson has really shallow teeth beds, which means there is less likelihood of food getting embedded in there, and therefore less chance of cavities. We are so relieved. Nothing compares to hearing a doctor affirm you as a parent. Roque deserves major props since he is the one in charge of brushing Greyson's teeth. Excellent job, Papi! Greyson has 16 of his 20 teeth, so we have four more molars to go and that's it, goodbye teething!
